I think my ideal there would be an actual pokemon world where getting eaten isn't the end. With them being able to be revived or whatever contributing to their casual attitude about people getting eaten. Where they have pokemon who are their 'partners', but they're practically just as likely to get eaten by their own pokemon as other trainers pokemon or wild pokemon. Which is fine, because it's only a minor setback.
