Back when I frequented [certain image board the system may or may not want me to name] /monster/ - most people seemed to agree (at least in the "de facto" sense.) All the written Original Content I remember was either a sort of "Urban Fantasy" or "Homebrew D&D" where the MGE was kind of like... just spread on top like an icing to the cake.
TLDR: best mileage you get is by treating MGE as a literal "monster manual" (the rest of the worldbuilding could serve as an inspiration, if for nothing else than to point out potential problems or even an outright "what not to do" -example in parts.
