you might want to put a "stroke" (i think that's what people have been calling it ITT) around the sound effect text, for better contrast. and an anon ITT put me onto "inkscape", which automates the process (i added "drop shadow" manually in gimp by duplicating the layer, making the one beneath it black, and moving it a few pixels down and to the right, which was tedious, but inkscape automates that, too). i use "drop shadow" for my captions, but i'm not convinced it provides the best contrast, but currently i'm sticking with it as i wait for specific colors behind it to make it clear that it's not enough to provide sufficient contrast against everything, so i should switch
