oh, i think you're right. but my logic was the last bullet point in that post:

i thought using quick mask would make it so none of the pixels in the selection would be see-through, but i guess logically it wouldn't do that, because you are still using the same brush. but i remember trying the brush and not liking how see-through it was, so i assumed quick masking a different layer to cut from it using the brush would be the solution. i must've just been using a different brush among those the editor in the screenshot i posted suggested, but not realized i'd switched. i thought since he recommended them all that they were all the same. so all i needed to not be stressed the entire time was just to choose a different brush and just draw with it. technology is super stressful for me. i assumed everything had to be complicated and hard
