Hm, now hear me out. The slimes shapeshift into the people they once were, or at least rando humans, just to keep the appearances up as a functioning kingdom. This way they could feed off of visitors, dignitaries, migrants from neighboring human realms. The king is obv the slime queen in disguise. They would also grow rich and prosperous since they wouldn't eat the food the peasant slimes would grow. This would both attract more humans, as well as be good for trade.
