i ran out of space anyway, but a few more things to add:
-don't be lazy about changing the color of the text for legibility when proofreading, knowing you'd have to change it later (this only affects me because i use gimp rather than inkscape, so i don't have"stroke" [outline] for legibility until i tediously add it manually)
-frequently make the image layer invisible (and turn any active guides/selections invisible) for fresh eyes on the edit itself, to see if anything pops-out as being glaringly wrong
