Paint stirrer is the best wood. The big ones are nice but the cheap ones are thinner and have a curve that could benefit your project. Second to that go to hobby lobby and get balsa. Also don't stain just fucking paint it.
That said, I don't get why you think putting USB holes in wood is easier than plastic. You can do anything to that piece of plastic easier than you can to wood and you don't have to fit it to the dash.
