I would say it still applies withing brackets. Like someone getting a mcmansion is infinitely more trash and crazy than a cottagechad of a similar income. People that make enough to afford "status symbols" but then go cheap/ugly with them because they care more about the respect/admiration of their lessers than their peers is definitely a kind of crazy. You see it all the time with immigrants who get the slightest leg up in their social group but aren't rich enough to transcend it.
