If you're the anon looking for a budget fileserver who doesn't need more than 500GB, then I'd say get 2x 1TB SSDs, and use btrfs raid1 mirror on them. Fags will screech that it's not a real backup but it'll give you enough safety for most things except manually doing rm -rf, so don't do that, BUT you can also learn to use btrfs snapshots which should help even against that.
At your storage sizes getting USB HDDs is probably not worth it.
Or if you want to go cheaper, you can definitely use USB HDDs but at that point you might as well plug them into a pi. It's going to be a super nigger rigged fileserver but it'll work. If you really don't need more now and are planning to replace it with a proper build later anyway, then might as well go for the cheap-ass option for now.
