Culturally I think people shun fanatics, but in my opinion we need more of those.
Radical people who are willing to self sacrifice in the face of harsh position, in order to raise the floor of society.
People like that don't seem to get appreciation until post mortem, but their legacy's impact and influence becomes/is obvious. It lasts forever and the next generations learn from it in valuable ways. Through published research and productions, stories and accounts.

I think it is so for all fields and most peoples. Unfortunately. It demotivates me because I consider how powerful people would be if we really combined our best efforts long term instead of ironically wasting so much more effort trying to get one over on each other in the short term.

Take comfort in the fact that progress can't be stopped. It only takes one very dedicated person to make huge lasting impacts, and inspire others to do the same.
