You want to know what it really boils down to? Support contracts. If they aren't constantly pushing out new half broken shit they can't make money supporting new half broken shit. Same reason they wanted to "standardize" the init system. It's a confusing undocumented mess that barely works. But it allows them to charge cold hard cash in return for support contracts no matter what distro is being used. As long as the distro is using systemd+cancer of course.

Is a load of bullshit. They took over the project after it had been around for 25+ years. Then sat on it and refused to do any maintenance or let anyone else add new features. They weren't "X devs" they were "freedesktop devs". Which have never produced anything of value ever.
