Wayland relies on extensions and external programs more than Xorg ever did. Wayland is becoming a monstrosity of spaghetti code before even reaching feature parity with Windows or Mac OS and it will become a bigger, uglier and even less maintainable monstrosity than Xorg simply because it doesn't have a working implementation but 5 different ones meaning that users and devs will ALWAYS have to deal with esoteric bugs that come from each specific implementation and the software struggling to accommodate all of them.
