She wasn't the first computer programmer but she did make a significant contribution to computer science and it connects later to Grace Hopper. Anyone who actually has in depth knowledge of the two of them will immediately know what I'm talking about. If you don't know, you haven't researched the subject matter deep enough to have an informed opinion.
It's interesting that womynists focus so heavily on Lovelace, having ignored other women, especially Grace Hopper, until recently when there's been more push back against the claims of Ada Lovelace being the first programmer. Guess womynists are more approving of wealthy aristocrats than they are of military women doing actual work.
