It's *end* of his rampage, the end of the story. He REGRETTED the killings. That's not counterintuitive, that's character development. That said, he wasn't a mass murderer. His story was one of revenge journey spiraling out of control because the gods kept using him then betraying him. He killed himself because he was the last god left, and thus the only who could continue shitting up the place. It was also his final act of revenge against Athena as well.
