When I mean protect it I mean in terms of chipping, and even then it only limits the size of chipping that occurs, not in terms of dulling.
My understanding was/is that harder knives dull slower but chip easier and vice versa.

My guess is the HRC rating is just invented, they probably looked at what VG10 can achieve then picked the upper end of that and called it a day.
The really bad thing is the low grind angle, which makes it even more likely to get damaged. Probably not a great choice for a beginner.
