They had to market to the gay and woman Macshit crowd (that will never buy a Thinkpad anyway) by making laptops too thin to accommodate a RJ-45 port - but the need for wired Ethernet is so common, and in conjunction with a reduction in poets, they made a dedicated proprietary port so you wouldn't have to use up one of your two USB ports for a USB Ethernet adapter.
