Personally, I run an minimalist linux setup (mostly terminal programs) on my T430 to squeeze every drop of processing power out of it that I can. It makes a huge difference in what would be unnoticable gains on a newer computer, but after successfully using it I decided to run the same setup on all of my PCs because there is no disadvantage to removing bloat. The only thing slowing me down is the big fat web browser.
The distro I use is almost completely irrelevant. It's the programs I use, or rather, the programs I don't use.
