It allows them to do moral panic to push for authoritarianism. The same thing happens in the UK with blue labour, the conservatives and reform.
You've used "liberal" there, but not in the sense that it really is applied here, the other terms they like to use are "moderates" too. They're all the same, and they have been since 1979. The US had it a bit earlier with Carter.
