The real reason is that business laptops like Thinkpads and Elitebooks have more parts available, are easier to work on, marginally better built (they used to actually be better built) and cheap. That's the appeal. I already have a gaming desktop so I really don't need a laptop for more than printing documents at the library every so often and when I'm watching a /diy/ video when I'm working in the garage. Sometimes it's nice to take to a friends house and play Battlefront 2 on PCSX2 or Halo 2 Project Cartographer every once in a while. They're cheap beaters.
