It's really easy, actually. Just get a raspberry pi or old computer with Debian (although the Tor project prefers non-Linux OSes as it's better for network resilience, so consider using OpenBSD, NetBSD, or something else). Then download Tor via your package manager, configure your torrc to run a Tor relay (it's only modifying four lines, look it up on torproject.org), restart the Tor daemon, and you're now running a Tor relay. It's as easy as that.
