I've never seen a formal designation but you can tell by glancing at them that some have through-holes and some have diffusers.
The through-hole with an LED produces a superior light for indicators and such, so many enthusiast boards still do LEDs this way and I don't expect that to change; but RGB boards with LEDs on the PCB are very common, so diffusers are common also, especially on meme switches aimed at lowest-common-denominator buyers.
In short, there are many options for both styles and neither one is rare. The diffuser will make it impossible to install your LED, so don't use those switches on any key where you need an LED.
