I've heard North American Indians generally don't like the term "native American" because it's more associated with South American Indians who they view as jungle apes.
But if they really cared they would have come up with a new name and made people use it, something like "First Nations" but less gay sounding.
Apache is actually a cool name and covers Indians from a wide area.
