Fedora KDE.

I am in the totally same boat as you, with the exception that I'm also a graphics designer, so I wanted Photoshop aswell (which never was going to be possible, and I've since just started using alternatives).

Basically started off with Mint, and while it was indeed easy to get started with, it left a lot of desires to be had.
I did not like the desktop environment. I found it to look old, and also very basic.

Some anon, in a thread way back, told me to try out Fedora, and I've been very happy since.
6 months in, and there has only really been 1 issue (which was caused by me having encrypted my boot drive).

I was suggested Kubuntu as well, but since they didn't come with the newest KDE, I decided to just go with Fedora.
But there's a lot of times where I was I was on a debian distro. Many programs only release a .deb install file, and then a more general AppImage for "everyone else".
But to me it was more important to have KDE 6, and not having to install it afterwards, potentially fucking up my entire system.

If you do decide to go with Kubuntu, at least keep Fedora in mind. It is very stable.
