Why can't US just nationalize Intel and pump it with money and competent personnel like Taiwan did with TSMC? You could do the same with Global Foundries as they have tons of talent but just lacked money to compete on latest nodes past 2020.
If US wanted to they could flip the semiconductor business on its head but they prefer being reliant on Taiwan forever. Nothing against Taiwan, they're pretty based, but I've thought the entire talking point of current administration was strengthening domestic industries? So where is it? They have the means. It would pay off long term, too. There are no downsides to this.
