HBM was not appreciably faster than good G5 back in the day (similar to currently HBM vs G7), a higher core count polaris die with a 320-bit bus would've had similar performance to v64 and been cheaper plus simpler to produce. The only use case for HBM is in pure compute acceleration and has little relevance in 99% of the market.
