A lot of religions include "fear of god" as part of their core tenets so I'm not really sure what the contradiction is supposed to be. Having fear is not exclusive with faith or belief. So even if fear is part of the motivation is the fear stems from their religious belief and not purely external/social (e.g. submitting so the mob doesn't kill you) it's still valid as a spiritual practice.
