That tree wasn't "fine" or alive. It was dead. If you paid attention you'd notice that it was brown and not green. So I'm sure it burned just fine.
Now you might counter this by saying she should have just collected stuff that had already fallen on the ground. Well, what if there wasn't any? And stuff that falls on the ground tends to get wet and rot. That wouldn't have burned very well, now would it? So maybe, just maybe they way she did things actually was the best way of going about it.
