Fear. The same reason why everyone took their eyes off it and just ran. You're right that there's a happy medium where you're less likely to be hit but when you've got a tree coming at you, you're not thinking logically, you're trying not to be crushed.
There'd be a lot less deaths if we could use hindsight instead of fear.
