Most conventionally attractive dudes will work and there's enough women into alternative body types that you'll be able to work with whatever you wanna play with at the time. If you're going for a full comic approach you're going to want to love the character as much as your audience so I'd suggest posting test images/designs and getting feedback and going from there.
As far as something I'd like to see more of but isn't usually done well? Scruff. Facial can be pretty common but dudes with well done body hair are a bit rarer (I can't be the only bitch that wants to lick a happy trail).
