It is not me that decides the State has to protect me, it is the State that enforces that protection at the threat of imprisonment if I don't give them my money.
The nation and the people are the same thing. When you protect me from the Mexicans, Canadians, Chinese, etc., you are acting as a bodyguard to me. Relative distance is irrelevant because it is a duty for a parent to protect their child, but not their duty to prevent their kid from scraping their knees. Just because the protection has a practical limit, doesn't mean that it isn't still a duty.
The State has claimed for itself a duty of protection and enforces that with violence against me.
And I have no ability to secede from this protection racket, either. I can't tell the US Army that my home is my responsibility and they don't have to hold off the Chinese from invading, I'll handle that.
