the line down the middle is not a rule, its just one technique to make it easier. If it doesn't make it easier, use different guides. Put lines on the reference image and then try to put the same lines on your circle, do whatever it takes to put the eye on without any trouble, that's the point of these guides.
If you're having trouble, then the fucking lines aren't helping, so you need to put them on the reference and find what makes it easy for you.
