How much do I need to know about drawing before I can work on 2D sprites or 3D art assets for an indie game?

I've been doing this "learning to draw" thing for a while, drawabox, loomis, proko, but I don't really have any desire to make "art pieces". Most of my interest is game related.

I got advice that knowing how to draw is essential for even being able to design say a 2d platformer character sprite. But now that I'm at least aware of a lot of the fundies (even if my own drawing skill is still /prebeg/ is that enough to branch to my actual interests?

Wondering if anyone else has gone down a similar path
