He acted like the smartest guy in the room for doing realpolitik shit but a lot of his realpolitik policies were things that were extremely damaging to America in the long-term and only mildly annoyed the Soviets in the short-term (e.g. supporting Islamism in Pakistan against India, supporting engagement with China, supporting Pol fucking Pot after he was deposed)
