The French are usually very proud of their hometown, villages, cities, banlieues.... There's a reason why fusions of cities, towns, village are usually very hard in France and only occur when it's politically motivated by mayors of the same party doing it without making local referundum for their populations
Bottom line is, a banlieusard born in his home banlieue, that lived his entire life there, would never call himself an inhabitant of the big city its banlieue is part of. Same in the countryside for villagers living nearby a big city. On the contrary you'd highly offend them.
