Japanese is not something acquired. Once you learn Japanese you dont retain it forever. It has to be maintained. Thats like saying gains at the gym are acquired.
Which is why if you arent going to Japan, its hard to justified KEEPING Japanese learned. If you learn it, but have no use for it, its going to deteriorate fast. And no, reading the occasional visual novel or smut wont be enough reason to keep this very difficult language sharp
