The Tigers (I & II) were breakthrough tanks. On paper their job was to be monsters at short but brutal assaults. The design didn't prioritize long term, day after day durability because they were supposed to be specialized tanks used only for specific circumstances, not daily drivers.
When Tigers were in full working order, they were monsters, but because of the realities of the war they ended up being used much beyond their doctrinal role and breaking down because of that.
German tank doctrine was by the end of the war wishful thinking, and German tank production throughout the war had a slow, craftsman style workflow to it that was not up to snuff for the industrial war the Germans found themselves in
