Culture war messaging has been an absolute WMD on public thought. Objectivity and facts won't matter much when people on both sides are fully and stubbornly settled in their reciprocal beliefs that all coastal cities are 24/7 PvP zones full of degenerates and browns, and that all flyover regions are full of resident evil-tier inbreds and subhuman poor people.
Combined with widespread media illiteracy, poor critical thinking, and a juvenile need to feel superior to everything that one identifies with "the other side", it's no surprise that people are so addicted to these boogeymen.
