Personally I feel the claim that "semi shotguns being picky about ammo" is a meme, at least when it comes to guns from well known brands (read: not turkshit). I've owned a variety of semi shotties over the years: Browning A5, Remington 1100, Mossberg 930, Beretta 1301 comp, Benelli Cordoba, M2 & M4. All of them would reliably cycle the cheapest wal-mart 1oz target loads up through magnum slugs & hunting loads. Yeah sure the A5 won't cycle that if you have the friction rings in the high power configuration, but it shoots them just fine if you RTFM and have it set up right. I didn't get a chance to try these in all of those guns but the 1301, 1100, and all the Benellis would cycle Fiocchi Exacta 7/8oz 1100fps super low-recoil trainer loads, which is the weakest 12ga I've ever come across.
Maybe turkshit guns are problematic, and things like less-lethal, dragons's breath, etc, won't reliably cycle semis, but I think the problem is vastly exaggerated when it comes to target, hunting, or defense loads.
