You have to feel for them, and they punch above their weight even now
I always rant on about sea/airlift capabilites when people start comparing (non US) militaries because they are seemingly the only people who can actually deploy their (crumbled) military where they want, while everyone else just harps on about XYZ vehicle or wunderwaffe or whatever
