The vibe I got from women buying guns was largely pragmatic. It wasn't a fear of DV or anybody they actually knew, more of the fear of crime in general and not having enough physical strength to adequately defend themselves without a gun. Most of them also had kids to protect.

California was also unique in that police have completely given up in some cities. Unless someone is dead, they aren't coming and criminals heavily capitalize on it. Most armed robberies and home invasions aren't even reported anymore because unless somebody is actually dead the police will not even come out take the report.
There was a hold up at a jewelry store in my city where these poor Turks were held at gunpoint and tortured with pliers and car batteries for hours with police watching it all go down from the McDonald's across the street. The gang took off work 1.5 million dollars of gold and jewelry, mutilated 3 people and did it again somewhere else the next day. Officially it never happened because the police refused to file a report, which double-screwed that business because they couldn't file a claim with their insurance. They ended up buying a fuckload of shotguns (lol Turk shotguns) from us and re-opening with their own money. God just imagine the humiliation of that experience. Being physically tortured by criminals who already got what they came for with the police watching.

That's just a Tuesday in California nowadays. Think about all the rape against women and violence against children that never gets reported. Anyone who has any sense is armed, legally or otherwise. There is no functioning rule of law.
