making a truly round barrel is hard.its not hard now with modern tools but its hard. making a socket that slips over this barrel is you have to hand fit each one.
the socket is integral to the bayonet too adding complexity
even in the 1900 with mosins it was doable but hard.the bayonets arent intechangable.
with a plug its fitting the caliber and the plug handle doesnt have to be perfect just good enough.
