The plan all along was the finish the last two books in the 5 year gap created by the show so that the final two seasons and books could be simul-released, which was considered the "future" of adaptations in the 201Xs
GRRM obviously failed at all that. It's also terrible revisionist history to claim he was uninvolved in the show even after season 5. He was still consulting on scripts right up until the final episode, and D&D were picked in the first place because they were able to guess at the final plot beats of the last two books to prove they were "real" fans
