My personal theory is that aerys ii was a normal fella until duskendale and all his nonsense before it was tywin and pycelle gaslighting the realm into thinking he was crazy so tywin could dispose of him once he'd convinced the king to wed cersei and rhaegar. Once that was done, he could use all the "craziness" to frame an assassination as the king doing something stupid and dying because of it and then the Lannisters would have control over the throne.
