even with how gratuitious and overwritten his prose often is, mccarthy's acclaim goes beyond just being stylistically established, though? i don't have much of a mind's eye, and he's one of the only writers whose imagery can really transport me into a scene. his work is so alive. those standout passages feel like written magic and make slogging through the tedious bits worth it.
