Sure, but the way GRRM sets it up, pretty nobody would want to be in the Kings Guard.

> no apparent income = no thanks
> live in a tiny prison cell = fuck that
> be a noble but serve like a peasant = fuck that also

Now if the Kings Guard were something like a Joints Chiefs of Staff with political power and a place on the Small Council, who traveled around Westeros with a retinue carrying out the king's orders and commanded his military forces and lived in luxury, with each having a nice apartment in the Red Keep and were allowed to keep a mistress, then ok but otherwise, you're better off serving some lesser noble lord.
