This is why it's also funny when people cite other Gundam series to somehow point out why GQuux is the way it is and mention Kamille/Four and so on. It's as if they don't understand the show they're defending.

Machu's infatuation and interest in Shuuji is tied into her true desires in life, want of freedom from convention and conformity that's even expressed in her opening scene where she highlights the artificiality of the colony in its intimation of Earth. His strangeness is particularly appealing because of this and the Kira Kira (a similar effect is used when she's talking about the colony, or the "real sea" when she dives and it is again associated with water when she submerges herself in the bath in episode 3, then Shuji just directly tells her how she can be free like a fish in a sea during the first clan battle) amplifies these existing desires. She wants that experience again and seeks out Shuuji, but it's not at all similar to the mind melding we see from, say, Kamille and Haman.

Man, the show isn't even subtle about this. The show even makes Machu specifically highlight superficial qualities of Shuji when she gushes over him directly after her mother unintentionally stomps on her dream or expresses disapproval of her desires. Then you get into the Deux, how she's portrayed, and the general portrayal of psycommu.
