When they first announced the show this was the first callback I was certain they would do. Since it's an iconic scene and also a scene Itano drew and Anno was always an Itano fanboy.
I don't really mind the Gundam callbacks especially in what's basically a what if work where you're getting what if version of old gundam events. It's the eva(I don't buy it being Ideon it's clearly closer to eva's version)/flcl other shit that has no place in the finale.
