Because 50-episode shows allow the characters to breathe and decompress and sweat the small details. The shorter the show is, the more plot-focused it has to be, at the expense of characterization and development, mobile suit battles, interpersonal conflicts, rising action, and finally a resolution.
Take for instance two Cyber-Newtypes of the Murasame Newtype Labs: Four and Deux. Both piloted a Psycho Gundam and laid waste to the surrounding city in their psychic rage. But Four also got to experience brief moments of lucidity, a small fling with Kamille, determination to protect him and a vain attempt to reclaim her lost memories, and finally resolution when she saves him from Jerid, at the cost of her life.
Now Deux appears, seems wrangled by Gates Capa, goes on a psychic rampage trying to kill Kycilia, then gets vaporized by Challia Bull and her story ends. I blame that solely and entirely on GQuuuuuuX being but twelve episodes in length. Add some more, and we could've seen more of Deux as a character before she had to inevitably exit the stage.
