I'd wager the fault with both Witch from Mercury and GQuuuuuuX laid with who's tasked to make the Gundam show.
WfM's problem was sticking to the high school idea while ignoring stuff like Spacian corporations exploiting the suffering of Earthians and what Elnora Samaya tried to achieve with Quiet Zero. GQuuuuuuX's problem was introducing too many characters, setting up potential story arcs, and doing little with them (Comoli, the girls that flocked around Amate/Machu, mentioning Amate/Machu's father being a diplomat, the status of the Earth Federation, Artesia Deikun/Sayla Mass being a shadow player in the post-war Zeon political intrigue, and how Shuji is related to Alternate Lalah that he devoted himself to end Alternate Lalah's suffering over her wanting to keep Casval/Char alive).
