I think this kind of shows the whole problem with the "history erasure" concept.

The only arcs that really used it to show how different things could be were Faiz and OOO, and in both of those cases you get complaints from fans EXACTLY because they are doing dramatic irony with things turning out very differently from the series. Otherwise you get a case the Ex-Aid episodes where even the writers themselves in the .5 episodes noted even though this was supposed to be a different timeline and these were supposed to be different versions of the characters, it was hard to say what were the changes.

So, even if the writers had used the concept better overall, you'd probably still end up with unsatisfied fans.
